Straight answer: it is run by a domain registrar, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Soletrader.nz is published by Moreweb NZ Ltd, a New Zealand owned domain registrar and web company.
The honest version
We register domain names for New Zealand businesses. A lot of the people who need one are just starting out on their own, and when they come to us they usually have a pile of other questions too: about IRD, about GST, about whether they need a company. Those questions are not really our business, but nobody was answering them in one place in plain language.
So we wrote it down. The guides here are free, and they are useful whether or not you ever buy anything from us. Where a domain name is genuinely the answer to something, we say so and we link to our own search; that is the deal, and now you know it.
What we are not
We are not accountants, lawyers or financial advisers. Everything here is general information about how the New Zealand system works, written to help you understand what to ask and who to ask. It is not advice about your situation, and it should not be the last thing you read before making a decision that matters.
For anything specific, talk to a chartered accountant or a lawyer. For the current rules, go to ird.govt.nz, business.govt.nz and acc.co.nz. Rates and thresholds change, and those sites are always right when we are out of date.
